A LETTER FROM DADHey all! Matt here. Hope you had a great Independence Day! I certainly did. July 4th and Father’s Day have become my favorite holidays along with Thanksgiving.Speaking of Fathers Day — Today I saw the letter that my Father wrote me the night I graduated high school. This letter is one of my prized possessions. I would trade all the cool guitars and trumpets for it in a heartbeat.
There have been some rough times when I would read this letter and it encouraged me. There have been some plain ‘ol sucky days when this letter inspired me. It has helped define who I am as a man. I have a cool dad.My friend Bill Glass says, “The Father’s blessing has a great power.” May we all remember that encouragement is a powerful thing, whether you’re a father or not. Hebrews 10:24-25 says: “Let us consider how to encourage one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the day drawing near.” Remember—encourage others. Dads, bless your children; it works! Here’s the letter. . . . . . Matt, “When you were born you made the track of a cub bear. Now you make the track of a man. As you graduate from High School, I think back through the years. Of all the good times and some rough times and I know I have been blessed to have a son like you.
I’ve had the opportunity to teach you a part of what I know. Now it is time for me to step aside as you pilot your own course. I do so proudly because I have confidence in your ability to handle life and make a positive experience of every day. This time in your life is not a culmination but a milestone, a new beginning with new responsibilities, new rewards, and new opportunities. Take advantage of these opportunities, for you will accomplish what you decide to accomplish. Your faith in God is strong and an encouragement to me. Always keep that faith and build on it. Without God, what good would life be? Throughout your life you will go many places and do many things. Remember this: wherever you may be, you are loved. In my house you have a home, love and a friend always. I am extremely happy for you and somewhat sad that your growing up days are over. I’ll miss those times. I guess what I’m trying to get said is this—you are my son and I am proud.” Love, Dad |
